On February 5th, 1999 a new camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterans was formed in Dahlonega, Georgia. The camp was named the Blue Ridge Rifles, after the second unit from Lumpkin County organized with 82 men to fight against the North in 1862. The Camp was chartered with 12 members and the official chartering ceremony was held at the Dahlonega Gold Museum. The group of decedents were given the Camp number 1860 and officially became; Camp 1860, Company E Phillips’ Legion, Blue Ridge Rifles Sons of Confederate Veterans.
In the Camps almost ten years of service to the Confederate cause, its members have participated in a multitude of events with other camps including Confederate Memorial Day services, holiday parades and grave marker ceremonies with both SCV Camps and with United Daughters of the Confederacy Chapters. This in addition to our own events, including the reenactment of Lt. General James Longstreet’s funeral and procession to mark the 100th Anniversary of his death held in 2004 in Gainesville, Georgia, Period Balls and our yearly Confederate Memorial Day services and display at the Gold Museum for Confederate History Month have made us one of the strongest Camp’s in the Georgia Division.
Our Camp has been honored to speak at several civic group functions and living histories in the public schools. We have been represented at the yearly Robert E. Lee birthday celebration at the Georgia capitol, Georgia Division State Reunions and were responsible for the Saturday night ball for the Annual Georgia Division Reunion held in Gainesville in 1996. We continue to work for the cause of our ancestors and with the Almighty’s providence we will continue.
